About Dr. Jaquel

My Training:

I am a  licensed Naturopathic Doctor (license obtained within the state of Connecticut) completing my studies at the University of Bridgeport (UB) College of Naturopathic Medicine (a four-year, accredited, graduate level naturopathic medical school). My comprehensive training included education in all basic sciences like anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology with a focus on clinical nutrition, nutritional supplementation, acupuncture, botanical medicine, homeopathy, counseling, and physical medicine. I completed over 1,300 clinical hours at several naturopathic private practices and UB's Clinic, which serves a diverse patient population, prior to obtaining my license. I interned at Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and received UBCNM's distinguished Service Award. I also have an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Applied Economics and Management, with a focus on Food Industry Management and a MBA in Healthcare Management from Quinnipiac University.

My story: Why I pursued a career in naturopathic medicine?

I always had an interest in alternative medicine since I was a child. Being of mixed heritage, Black and Chinese, I also observed the benefits of alternative healing practices at home.  I was enrolled in a medical program track and feeder program from high school into college and have several allopathic medical doctors in my family, but it never felt like a good match.  Furthermore, I saw my mother struggle with lupus, an autoimmune condition, as an adolescent, and I didn't feel that the conventional model of healthcare addressed all of her needs.

I learned about naturopathic medicine while working in the business field for a few years, and immediately knew that naturopathic medicine was my next path in life. I went back to school part-time while working a full time job to complete pre-med requisites, and 1.5 years later, I was enrolled at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine.

What are my areas of focus?
As a naturopathic doctor, I am trained to address the comprehensive health care needs for the entire family.  I do have a particular focus on women's health, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, weight loss, chronic fatigue, anxiety and depression.  I use varied modalities including dietary considerations, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture and naturopathic manipulation. I have received additional training in European homeopathic medicine, studying under Dr. Gerard Gueniot, who was a world's leading physician in biotherapeutic drainage.

What is my approach?
I would say I'm a pretty fair, balanced person and I apply that in my practice and philosophy as a naturopathic doctor.  I always aim to meet people where they are at and focus on the underlying cause of disease. In clinical practice, I would say I'm a good listener and educator and make sure to employ that philosophy when I'm working with any patient.

What I like to do outside of seeing patients?

I'm quite passionate and active in the profession, currently serving as the President-Elect for the American Association of Naturopathic Physician and chair the Professional Affairs Committee for the association.  I've always been an advocate for community and public health and also work as a senior healthcare administrator in the field. I enjoy traveling whenever and wherever, photography, reading and learning new things, kickboxing, and dancing.
